Phoenix Light Rail Should Extend Free Ride Deadline

by Peter Smith

People are still jamming onto the Phoenix light rail system, at least while it’s free. Here’s the thing, though, not everyone is getting a chance to see what it’s like — it’s all too jammed up - the train, the parking lots, everything. We have to remember that many of the people have never been on mass transit before. That’s just absolutely incredible.

But to take advantage of that incredible fact, and to take advantage of the incredible outpouring of excitement over the new line, Metro officials should extent the free ride timeline for a full week to make sure that everyone who wants to ride the new light rail can do so for free. I mean, they paid for the damn thing, let them ride it once for free.

There are myriad reasons this make sense, but at the end of the day it comes down to this — win a whole lot of goodwill, and it’ll only cost you very little. They’re building a few new lines in town, go ahead and solidify public support right now.

…Adding, they should make weekend fares either greatly reduced or free. This goes back to my latest ‘decongestion pricing’ rant. But for weekend service, we need ‘congestion pricing’ - something to make the trains more crowded so people come downtown and spend their money and all that. With so little car traffic on the weekends, relatively speaking, and people not being in a rush, they’ll hop in the car. Decreasing the weekend prices for the Metro is a perfect way to help everyone win. You’re welcome.
