“Smooth”
About that new toy train set down in Phoenix:
5. Finally, the most common word the people I interviewed used to describe their rides on the trains: “Smooth.”
Maybe ’smooth’ means nothing at all, but maybe it suggests that people could actuallly…<gulp>….enjoy taking the train. This has serious implications if we’re trying to pull people out of their cars.
This is not the first time we’re suggesting that getting from Point A to Point B could, and maybe even should, be enjoyable.
If you want to know what it’s going to take to get people out of their cars and onto transit - assuming they can’t or won’t walk or ride a bike - take a long, hard look at the graph at the bottom of this post. I might try to track down the ‘emotion breakdown’ of bus vs. rail transit. I have a feeling that it’s very significantly in favor of rail. Again, serious implications.
