Bicycle & Pedestrian Traffic Program Manager

by Peter Smith

That’s my guess for the title we should give to the folks who head up bike and walk programs in various cities. Actually, my guess is really bad, but I agree with the up-and-coming rated-rookie anonymous blogger out of Connecticut - ‘Coordinator’ is just not cuttin it as a title for the most important person us bike and walk folks have in the city government.

‘Program Manager,’ in general, is a good title that relays a good amount of authority - a more appropriate level of authority - and still sounds relatively cryptic and wonky, so it’ll fit right in with the traffic department and DPW folks.

It’s pretty rare that I hear an idea that I’m impressed with, and rarer still when that idea hasn’t come from my own pen — this is one such occasion.

:)

Seriously, though, when you hear an idea like this, you start to think that there are some independent minds left in the world. An idea like this comes from having the independence of mind to challenge even our most common assumptions. It’s great stuff.

For the record, it seems we have one or two folks sharing ‘top position’ in our Bike department here in San Francisco - ‘Bicycle Program Manager‘ is the title of choice, apparently.
