Toronto, Transit City

by Peter Smith

Toronto is going rail in a big way. I’m so happy. And relieved. Toronto (wiki) is probably the greatest city on earth. It would have been terrible had they decided they didn’t want real transit.

The promo below talks about installing bicycle infrastructure ‘when possible’. Toronto bike advocates need to reply with two words — the first begins with ‘F’ and the second begins with ‘U’. They need to demand real bicycle infrastructure along every single transit line, without exception - and not just crappy little bike lanes - they need to push for full-on, physically-separated bike paths - even if that’s just a grade separation from regular death mobile traffic.

Of course, us San Francisco bike advocates need to demand the same of our officials. Even when we lose the war for real transit and we get BRT, we still need to push for real bicycle infrastructure.

I feel bad for citizens in places like Winnipeg who are having BRT foisted upon them. I’m glad that others see BRT for what it is - at best a White Elephant (wiki), at worst - ‘worse than nothing.’

  1. “When possible” really isn’t good enough. Especially when the bike lanes shown in the image are so very narrow and have no separation from the motor vehicles.
