AIA National Convention In Town This Spring
End of April. Chronicle article here. Convention site here. American Institute of Architects website here. Wiki page here.
Looks like there will be some window dressing:
– Tours will run the gamut from a full-day getaway to Carmel-by-the-Sea to a bicycle ride past downtown San Francisco landmarks.
More details on this strictly recreation-only ride from the convention website:
GT03 Explore San Francisco Waterfront and Sausalito - Bicycle and Ferry Adventure
Bicycle, Ferry, and Walking Tour
We will assemble at the San Francisco landmark, the Ferry Building, and depart on a bicycle tour of architectural wonders along the city’s waterfront. After passing Aquatic Park, Fort Mason, the Marina and Presidio neighborhoods, and Crissy Field to Fort Point, we cross the Golden Gate Bridge on a wide bike path, then pedal through Vista Point to Old Fort Baker. The next stop is famed Sausalito, with its shops and delicious food. Our adventure ends with a leisurely ferry ride back to San Francisco’s Ferry Building.
Saturday, 8 a.m.–noon, $95
The AIA does not think walking or biking can get you around - they’re not ‘real transportation.’ But you already knew that.
My only run-in so far with the AIA was a scary disaster. If it’s one thing I hate more than the word ‘starchitects,’ it’s actual architects. I don’t hate them as people - I just hate what they’ve done to our cities and towns.
