Violence That Can Go Unpunished

by Peter Smith

Searching the internet for something else, I stumbled upon this New York Times column from 1996. It discusses our tolerance for death-by-auto:

If carnage on that scale were the result of terrorist actions, the entire city would be in an uproar, demanding that City Hall and the police do something. When did wholesale death by automobile become an unavoidable natural phenomenon? Yet for some reason the problem draws scant public attention, unless it involves a spectacular case like the one yesterday in which Police Officer Neil Forster was mowed down and severely injured while directing traffic on the Major Deegan, according to the police, by a fellow officer who was drunk.

When I hear stories of people getting very, very upset, I become very, very hopeful. I’m not suggesting anyone start throwing shoes, but by all means - let your elected officials know how you feel.
