Autolib, Velib For Cars

by Peter Smith

Not sure how I missed it in the post about the Paris Velib bike-sharing program from PBS, but it mentions a car-sharing service called ‘Autolib’ - like Velib, but for cars. I think it’s a great idea.

I’ve made the case that ZipCar should offer bike-sharing. And though I’ve made the case that any attempts to save, extend, and/or expand the auto industry should not be supported by bikers and walkers and people who care about the places we live — our cities and the earth — car-sharing is a step in the right direction, so we should support it. And if the cars used for car-sharing programs are greenish, golf car-like cars, then fine by me. I’d rather get hit by one of those than a 60-ft long, multi-ton bendy-bus sham-tram.
