Traffic Set To Increase?
It just seems strange to me that anyone would consider tolerating an increase in automobile traffic - much less go out of their way to accommodate it:
With traffic projected to increase dramatically over the next 20 years around the eastern border between San Mateo and San Francisco counties, multiple city, county and state transportation and planning agencies have been collaborating on a bi-county study to measure the impact and propose solutions.
The planning departments of San Francisco, Brisbane and Daly City estimate 18,000 housing units and 15 million square feet of commercial office space could be built over the next two decades, primarily around the Brisbane bay lands and Cow Hollow neighborhood in Daly City, and Visitacion Valley and Hunters Point in San Francisco.
Of course, they’re planning for BRT - my favorite.
The way I see it, there should not be any new roads built anywhere that could accommodate new auto traffic. If new development cannot be supported by new, real transit options, then that new development should not happen — it’s pretty simple.
…Related post over at the OW — if you have decent public transit infrastructure - dedicated bike lanes, bike-sharing, rail - it can absorb new growth. There’s a lesson there, somewhere.
