themediaisdying
themediaisdying is a Twitter handle for some person who is just keeping a quick running list of the dying media business, as it happens. I put a sample of it in the ride sidebar for a while. Below are five of the most recent tweets:
- themediaisdying: Lisa Cullen is leaving TIME. (Thanks Paige)
- themediaisdying: UPDATE: 65 lay offs @ NPR by EOD - no digi media cuts - 34 go in news inc Howard Berkes out. (Tnx Amy, Jeremy, Jane and Helen)
- themediaisdying: GOOGLE BOOKS now allows you to search magazine articles. Not millions of outlets but step in right direction http://books.google.com/books
- themediaisdying: NFL Films laying off 150 (Thanks Mike).
- themediaisdying: Alexandra Kaptik is the new news editor on the national desk of the WALL STREET JOURNAL.
I wondered aloud if Streetsblog should ‘go commercial,’ and then started tracking the demise of bike/transportation-related blogs with this post here. I soon realized, however, that this was just the beginning.
I know every sector is going to suffer over the next few years, but I can’t help but think that maybe the traditional media - which has gotten fat off of corporate interests like the auto industry - might be looking at the same type of ‘realignment’ that the auto industry might eventually face.
Many newspapers are either dead or are dying, overseas journalists and local bloggers are taking over for folding media outlets, internet traffic continues to surge, remaining media outlets continue to consolidate and fire people and move their operations to online only, and now we have Nobel Prizes for online publications.
Where does it all end?
I think citizen-run media could have a dramatic impact on our ability to force real changes in public policy regarding livable streets. Maybe something to think about.
