GM To Request $400,000 Per Worker

by Peter Smith

That would be $100 Billion divided by GM’s 250,000 worldwide workforce. Where’s the ‘$100 Billion’ figure come from? It comes from financial analysts who see the obvious state of the automotive industry and know that Detroit will be back for even more money in the not-too-distant future.

I have a better idea.

Let’s build universal health care - GM said it would help - so GM doesn’t have to keep moving factories to places with universal health care. Notice the $100 Billion figure again.

And don’t be deluded into thinking that GM workers actually have decent health care - like members of Congress - most of that money is getting eaten by the HMOs and other criminal rip-offs in the U.S. healthcare system.

We should not attempt to save the auto industry. Let’s save the what’s left of the economy by doling out extended benefits to the millions of unemployed Americans over the next few years while the auto industry shrinks and/or evaporates, and new, more-sustainable industry can arise in its place. Throwing this money at GM and the rest of the Detroit crew is just throwing good money after bad. It’s got to stop.
