Gift Memberships Need Online Makeover

by Peter Smith

In my never-ending quest to create more work for already-overworked non-profits, I would like to recommend a beautiful makeover for gift memberships. The SFBC has them (you have until Monday, December 15th, to order). Other groups have them. But, as awesome as all the benefits of membership are, the web-based presentation for buying someone a gift membership is lacking.

The sign-up form needs to be big and bold and beautiful. You should be able to select a bike-type card that is generic, or geared towards one of the holidays or religions or whatever. And, ideally, what actually gets delivered to the recipient should be whatever design you selected online, with your customized message.

As you can see from my expert holiday card rendering in the upper-right, I will not be volunteering for this particular effort.

Of course, it’s always a question of resources. If you typically move 10 gift memberships over the holidays, could you move 40 if you did something really nice? Lots of people out there are struggling right now - we’re willing to barter. There may be some bikey web and/or design folks who would be willing to do some work for a simple link from the much-trafficked advocacy website. A simple link and shout-out in the newsletter and/or blog could be a real value proposition for independent workers who thrive or just survive on word of mouth.

And we don’t have to confine ourselves to just this Decemberish holiday season - there are plenty of holidays throughout the year. Friends and boyfriends and girlfriends and husbands and wives come and go. A gift membership is a great way to bring that special someone into the fold.
