Another Crosswalk Kill, White SUV Sought
This happened last night - Friday night:
SAN FRANCISCO — Police are investigating a deadly hit-and-run accident in which a sports utility vehicle struck a man walking in a marked pedestrian crosswalk Friday night.
A pedestrian, identified as city resident Gerardo Yambao, 56, was struck by a hit-and-run driver at Lake Merced and Brotherhood Way around 7:40 p.m., according to the San Francisco medical examiner’s office.
The incident happened just before 8 p.m. near the busy intersection of Lake Merced Boulevard and Brotherhood Way.
Police say a white SUV speeding along Lake Merced struck and killed the pedestrian, then sped off.
Pieces from the front end of the SUV were scattered across the road.
“From what we can gather, he was driving in excess of the speed limit,” said police lieutenant Michael Caplan.
According to San Francisco Police statistics the area near the intersection averages several pedestrian accidents each year. Residents at nearby Parkmerced cite pedestrian safety as a top priority.
Authorities are searching for a white sport utility vehicle in connection with the crash, police said.
We’ve talked about how outlaw drivers need to be stopped. We pointed to a graphic talking about how effective motorist speeding is at killing people. Below is a bar graph showing why motorized traffic throughout San Francisco has to be lowered to 20 MPH or less:
I would like to see KTVU or another local station start releasing more of their video coverage on the web. I don’t care if they jam a car ad in there - just get it done.
If one of our local television stations doesn’t do the job of sticking up for us out there, we just might have to do it ourselves.
I think we should seriously start thinking about an Ambert Alert-type system for tracking down motorists who kill pedestrians and bikers. And I’d like to have some type of reward money - $5,000 or so - for tips leading to the criminals.
