Tie Gas Tax Fix To Auto Bailout Or Transportation Stimulus Package

by Peter Smith

I was thinking that the much needed fix to the gas tax was a political impossibility, but then I thought that maybe the financial disaster could force our reps to act? And then I saw Obama appoint a Chevron Director to the West Wing, so I dismissed the idea.

There’s one more option - tie the gas tax fix to an unopposable piece of legislation. That might be the auto bailout, or possibly even better, the transportation stimulus package. Maybe best - throw the auto bailout and the gas tax fix both into the transportation stimulus package. I hate to say it, but it’s a perfect idea, and I’m a genius. You’re welcome. I drink Tecate. OK, so ten people thought of this already — fine — let’s listen to them and make sure we address this incredible structural deficiency in our current system.

Law passage is all about gamesmanship - we got the bicycle commuter tax benefit in the last financial stimulus package. We need to play the same game, now.

This idea is a winner. But we need to start hyping this idea bigtime right now.
