Fun EIR Tidbit

by Peter Smith

Robert Moses, the man responsible for bringing so much misery and destruction to the people of New York - especially the poorer people of the Bronx - by building highways over and through everything - was a peculiar cat.

From The Geography of Nowhere:

His Cross Bronx Expressway all but destroyed the life of the borough. It is estimated that during his career Moses caused a quarter of a million people to be evicted from their homes to make way for his highways. When he began his career, Long Island was rural. When he retired in 1968, it was a parking lot. His expertise at building–at “getting things done,” as he liked to put it–was divorced from his realistic notion of consequences. The idea of the automobile intoxicated him and spurred his quest for power. But aside from a few lessons in the early 1920s, the man never drove a car.

  1. What does this have to do with EIRs? Other than the fact that Rob Anderson doesn’t own a car?

  2. @those dudes, you got it — the ‘EIR’ in the title was made as a reference the pro-car lobbyist who shares more than a little blame for the incredibly destructive bike plan EIR requirement — someone who shares traits with a person who helped cause so much destruction in New York.

so, the ‘fun EIR tidbit’ is not a specific detail about the text of the Draft EIR, but rather a quick commentary on the background of the EIR.
