I stopped into a couple of bike stores this weekend. In the first, I had to go to the second floor to find any bikes with a chainguard. Then I stopped into the store that I’m probably supposed to hate, but keep leaving with the feeling that they’re doing more, on the whole, for the American people than every other independent bike shop in America — Performance Bikes.
When I walked in, I saw this:

Winter Commuter Combo?? Sweet! I couldn’t have done better myself (larger version).
And they’re telling you how to make cycling into a family activity. It’s almost too good to be true.
This is what the tag looked like on the bike towards the back:

Look at that — a real commuter bike. In a bike store. It’s enough to make a grown man cry.
I’ve been wanting to see more of this for a while now, and I have no idea if it actually works or not - I hope so. It’s almost like…they’re trying to sell some bikes or something. Maybe even suggest to people that this is a normal activity that normal people do.
Hey - what’s that?

Yes - it’s ugly. But a chainguard is a chainguard - I’ll take it.
I’m not suggesting that bike shops and other bike retailers - independent and otherwise - need to put themselves out of business pushing commuter gear, but throw us advocates a bone. We’re like Jerry Maguire over here - help us, help you.
