Better Place Seeks To Slow Demise Of Automobile

by Peter Smith

Crocodile TearsThe latest hoopla about delaying the extinction of the automobile has the mayors of San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose all duking it out to see who can get a bigger slice of that green pie. Better Place is the Palo Alto-based tech organization that is promising to save us all from high gasoline prices. Awesome.

I guess if we’re into building up the environmental catastrophe that is the battery industry, then sure - let’s spend a whole bunch of money to further poison the planet. Makes sense.

For my part, I’d be happy to have these three mayors get together for initiatives which are actually important - initiatives that can really benefit society. Forget an electric car network - how about a simple bike lane network? It’ll be a fraction of the cost, and roughly 10,000 times more effective at helping people save money, at curbing global warming, at reducing pollution, etc.

As for worthwhile ventures, don’t expect our technology heroes to step up - even if a project is happening right in their back yard - even if some of those folks claim to be ‘really scared.’

We have an expression for that type of thing.

To be fair, there are tech entrepreneurs who give a shit. Hopefully more of them in the much-government-subsidized Silion Valley will join them soon.
