Offer Valet Bicycle Parking, Bike-Sharing At Inauguration
The Obama inauguration is going to be huge. The local transit authority, WMATA, says stations and trains are going to be ‘packed.’ Crowds are being estimated at up to 3 to 5 million people.
Who wants to get hands-runneth-over by security guards just so you can stand on a packed platform with dudes in blue, carrying big, automatic weapons? Not me. People need to be able to go by bike, and they need a place to put their bikes when they arrive.
The local cycling organization knows how to do bike valet parking - they should offer it at the inauguration. Go get some money off of Mayor Fenty and tell him you’ll talk up his ‘green’ credentials.
The city is going to be packed for days both before and after the inauguration - people will need a way to get around, to see the awesome sights, to experience sunny downtown DC, and all of its spread-out monuments. What better way than by bike? If they can offer bike-sharing for the Democratic and Republican national conventions, then why not for the week-long festivities that will surround Inauguration Day? DC, in fact, already has a starter bike-sharing program — why not give it a boost?
January 20 is about 7 weeks away - that’s plenty of time if you jump on it, now. Let’s make it happen, y’all.
Note: Respect given to the SmartBike Program for describing themselves as ‘public transportation‘:
Leave comment (1)SmartBike is an exciting new means of public transportation, using modern technology to offer citizens bicycles where and when they need it!
[p.s. The Forums are open for participation.]
