Jogging In The Bike Lane, Against Traffic

by Peter Smith

I don’t mind so much if you jog in the bike lane, just don’t expect me to ride out into traffic to avoid you. Don’t expect me to put myself in danger to accommodate your personal running preference. You move yourself out of my way - into traffic, onto the sidewalk, over parked cars - I don’t really care - just get out of my way.

And must you really run against traffic? I know you don’t feel safe running with traffic - I don’t feel safe riding with traffic. And that’s all the more reason you should not be in the bike lane in the first place - it’s the one small refuse that we cyclists have in this city - and its usefulness to us is already very limited, as I’m sure you know.

But if you just absolutely have to be there, in the bike lane - if the Embarcadero’s spectacularly-wide sidewalk is not quite wide enough for you and your special running requirements - then run with traffic to give me a few seconds to either slow down or to calculate if I can safely go around you without getting mowed down by a car from behind.

Thank you.

That is all.

  1. feel ya. the same goes for oncoming bicyclists.
“you have to follow the rules” (SAW).

Im not going to rip you a part with an engineered metal apparatus — but it makes it a lot easier for everyone.

I recently had a co-worker break some bones in a bike - bike collision. And what about our new recruits?

Bicyclists that are new to biking in the city.
Can we find order within the chaos?

Ride like a demon - but dont be an asshole

  2. ditto.

takes a few seconds to be safer, everyone

  3. I get so mad when runners are in the bike lane backwards with headphones on and try to play chicken with me, thus forcing me into traffic. I have been becoming more aggressive with these rude joggers, yelling at them to move and such and will continue to do so. As far as I’m concerned, these runners are unsafe, and what they’re doing should be illegal (well it is in some places) and enforced .

Thanks for letting me vent. I got in a bad bike accident thanks to dodging an non-yielding runner and the lovely scars on my leg will be permanent.
