No Leadership On Federal DOT Pick From Bike/Walk Community

by Peter Smith

Just a bit of stating the obvious - someone with a microphone and a paycheck should organize a website called ‘Pick Our Next DOT Secretary.’ Or just write a blog post, take an informal survey, make a pick, and then we’ll start ringing Obama’s phones off the hook.

Waiting around for Obama or the lobbyists to pick our next DOT head is asinine. I’ve said it before, I’m saying it now, and I’ll say it until the day and maybe even after we have our new DOT leader thrust upon us - we need to pick our new DOT head, not anybody else.

Obama had at least several thousand supporters in San Francisco - many who actively worked for his campaign, for free - they should also have a say in who the next DOT pick is. There are tens of thousands of cycling Obama supporters around the U.S. They helped put him in office. They deserve a say.

Jacksonville Transit points out that we’re probably already screwed, but there might still be a chance to get someone in there who has walked or ridden their bike at some time in the last twenty years.

At this point, it’s so late in the game, it almost doesn’t matter who it is (I’m with Sadik-Khan) - just that it’s someone who has ridden a bike in the last twenty years and is still breathing. Else, we’ll get more of the same.

Completely agree but I don’t know of any organization picking this up. I hope someone posts something.

All is not lost if Obama goes with someone more traditional, though. The issue is getting organized and transmitting the message.
