My Recent Interactions With Buses And Rail Cars And Tracks

by Peter Smith

Not scientific in any way, but I was just reading through some old posts, and as I was going through the BRT posts, I was reminded of my recent experiences with buses and trains over the past few days.

Here’s what I remember - my last four run-ins with the behemoths:

  1. Almost eated. I forget the details of this one. I think I was being my usual pseudo-aggressive biking self, and before I knew it I was looking into a huge wheel well.
  2. Muni bus had eated a taxi (much like this) on the north side of Market St. and something (2nd?) - one of those hard-left-then-right turns as you cross Market Street. Everyone seemed fine expect for the taxi car itself.
  3. Articulated (long, joined) Muni bus being towed down Ocean Ave. Not a close call - it just looked like a relic from back in the day.
  4. Muni bus parked or broken down on Market Street (near 4th?). Blocks under wheels. Driver sleeping at wheel. Scene looked a bit odd.

And a couple of observations from the light rail/streetcars and rail tracks interactions:

  1. Another biker and myself glided along, carelessly, next to a rail streetcar as it headed down Market towards the Embarcadero. We knew it was not going to swerve.
  2. I crossed a bunch of rail tracks in various parts of the city. I noticed a bunch of other people do the same. Fat-tired bikes have less problems with rails, it seems.
