The Honeymoon Isn’t Over, But…

by Peter Smith

So begins one person who recently rode the Cleveland BRT for the second time:

The honeymoon isn’t over, but, on my second RTA Health Line ride  it occurred to me just how much money I am spending to do it.

First, $4.00/round trip on either Rapid from Triskett or #22 bus - both to Public Square. Then $4.00 more round trip on the Health Line.  That means $8.00/day. They don’t allow transfers to work on the Health Line, as an RTA staff person told me while we waited for the bus to show up outside Tower City. She said they want to make sure the lines are moving smoothly as people enter the bus so fares are paid before you get on and no one on board has time to look at transfers.  I understand wanting it to go smoothly but seriously, that is a lot of money to ride from Triskett to E. 123rd.

The trip down was crowded, slow, and I was late for my Clinic appointment, even though I allowed 1 1/2 hours to get there. The ride home had no time line on it so maybe that helped keep me less anxious; plus, there were fewer riders.

There is more on the elimination of another bus route in the Cleveland area. There will be some of this anywhere new bus or rail service is installed, so folks who depend on local bus service will want to pay attention.

  1. Really? Someone on the internet complaining about Public Transit shouldn’t really merit a post…

And, besides, the person’s next blog entry proclaims that the line was NOT removed

  2. Cleveland BRT is not just ‘Public Transit’ - it is ‘The Most Important Public Transit Project Of The Next 100 Years,’ because it has the potential to make or break BRT in America. It is already directly affecting Cleveland, of course, and it may have a say in what SF does or doesn’t do wrt BRT.

The people of America turn their BRT-loving eyes to you, Cleveland. Make us proud!
