The Green Arcade Bookstore

The Green ArcadeFile this under ‘General Interest’. The Green Arcade bookstore (map) just opened up across from Caffe Trieste (map) on Market St.

The Livable City homepage announced the grand opening, which happened just a couple of days ago:

Independent bookstores help make cities livable and unique. We are pleased to see a new independent bookstore opening on Market Street which focuses on livability and sustainability. The Green Arcade specializes in books on the environment, politics, sustainability, the slow food movement, organics, urban planning and green children’s books, together with other sustainably-produced merchandise.

And the SFBC is participating in a fundraiser at the bookstore on Tuesday night. The fundraiser is for John Avalos, one of the SFBC-endorsed candidates:

Transpo-Enviros Party for Avalos

Tue., Oct. 14 | 6pm - The Green Arcade Bookstore - 1680 Market St. @ Gough, San Francisco, CA 94102

Come check out San Francisco’s newest green bookstore and help keep the Board of Supervisors strong in support of environmental priorities like sustainable transportation by supporting John Avalos, a regular bicyclist and SFBC member.

Meet John, and some of San Francisco’s sustainable transportation leaders, including Leah Shahum, executive director of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition; Tom Radulovich, executive director of Livable City and BART Board member; and Dave Snyder, veteran sustainable transportation advocate and former E.D. of both those groups. This is a great chance to meet John, hear about his position on key issues, and, hopefully, to support his campaign.

Let’s put some more bicycle people in office.

The Car-Free Market St. Organizing Meeting is going on at the same time as the Avalos fundraiser, and I’ll probably end up at the Market St. meeting. I’ll have plenty of notes from the meeting, so if you’d like to hit the fundraiser, go for it.

Here’s the sign:

Here’s the storefront — who do you think the store supports?

I took a cruise around after the store opened a bit later and I liked what I saw - lots of very hippy-dippy, sustainability, activist-type books, including plenty I’d never seen before. There was no bike parking (Thanks, Judge!), so I asked to bring my bike inside - there’s really nowhere but across the street to lock up your bike - the lone bike rack outside of Caffe Trieste.

  1. I’ll just be off in the corner grumbling about the signs in their window. Don’t mind me…
