It’s Go Time — Did you register to vote yet?

by Peter Smith

The City and County of San Francisco Department of Elections tells us that October 20th is the last day to register to vote:

November 4, 2008 Consolidated General Election

October 6, 2008:
Early voting at City Hall begins
First Day the Department mails Vote-by-Mail ballots to Voters

October 20, 2008:
Last day to register to vote

October 28, 2008:
Last day to request a vote-by-mail ballot

I’m pretty skeptical of voting in this country, now. I’ve seen too much election-day treachery - intimidation by roving gangs of civilians, intidimation by uniformed police officers, various forms of legal treachery like cleansing the voter rolls of African-Americans - you name it. But I’m still going to do my best to register to vote, and then I’m going to do my best to make sure my vote is counted. I don’t have high hopes that my vote will actually be counted, but I figure we should at least try, to honor all the folks who suffered and died trying to get the right to vote.

Time is running out. There are a lot of bicycle-friendly candidates running for office, and having bike-friendly politicians can make a big difference in our lives as bicyclists and livable streets advocates. The SFBC endorsements are in - check them out. It could be close. Local elections are particularly important for the type of work we’re doing.

This page says we can register in person, but I’m skeptical. I’m going to head down there tomorrow and see what they say. I figure they’re probably a bit like the DMV - tell you some bogus reason why you can’t do it today - make you go retrieve some receipt from another state from 10 years ago. That’s why you have to do it now — if you are not yet registered, give it a whirl right away - today. Then wait for proof of registration. Then find your voting/polling place, and go take care of business. It’s important. If you don’t have proof of registration after a few days, make some calls and/or go back down to City Hall. It’ll cost you three dollars, but you’ll rest a bit easier on voting day - you’ll know that they might actually let you vote.

Here’s where I’m going to head tomorrow:

Department of Elections
1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, Room 48
San Francisco, CA 94102-4634

And early voting is a good idea according to some, but I’ve also heard plenty of stories of early votes just getting trashed due to whatever technicality, so be careful. October 20th is a Monday - the 3rd Monday from today. That’s only 12 business days. Good luck.

here we go.
