Pay off parking fines by volunteering for the SFBC
Check out this great way to pay off parking tickets
Need to pay parking tickets? Work them off at SFBC through a special DPT program called Project 20!
Here’s what you do to sign up:
- First go to 1380 Howard St, 1st Floor, Monday - Friday, between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. phone: 415-626-4995
- After signing a contract outlining terms and amounts, you will be sent to the Project 20 offices on 7th Street, near the Hall of Justice.
- E-mail Kate or call 431-BIKE x303 to sign up as a volunteer. We’ll happily give you as many hours as you need!
DPT is the Division of Parking and Transit. It is a unit of the SFMTA.
A further description of Project 20:
The Project 20 Fine Alternatives program is for people who cannot afford to pay their parking tickets or traffic violations. People are assigned community service hours in lieu of paying.
Project 20 serves the City and County of San Francisco. All clients must have a referral from either of these departments to participate in Project 20. Out-of-county cases require a referral from the California League of Alternative Service Programs.
That seems the be the main requirement - that you are unable to pay your fine, and you’ll have to convince the ticketing government that you are unable to pay. There is an FAQ here, with a few more requirements.
I was not sure where the term ‘Project 20′ came from, so I did a little more investigation and found that Project 20 is for San Francisco, Project 22 is for Oakland, and Berkeley has something called the BCSW (Berkeley Community Service Works). I called several agencies around San Francisco, Oakland, and even Berkeley, and none of them seems to know where the names ‘Project 20′ and ‘Project 22′ came from. That should not stop anyone from volunteering for the SFBC, though. ![]()
