MyBikeLane - San Francisco

by Peter Smith

MyBikeLane.com - San FranciscoYou may have heard of a site called MyBikeLane.com that has bicyclists take pictures of cars parked in bike lanes, so the pictures can be posted on the internet, and hopefully the car drivers will be shamed into not parking in bike lanes in the future.

Well, the service works for San Francisco, it works great, and I’d love to see it put to more use.

How does it work?

How To Use MyBikelane

  • Bring your digital camera or camera phone on your next bike ride.
  • If you see a car/truck/etc. parked in the bikelane, take a picture of that car, making sure to try to capture the license plates in your picture (if they are not clear, that is ok, we will still take the pic).
  • Upload your picture to our site (using the button in the upper right) and tell us where you saw this incident.
  • Browse around and see other submissions

Pretty simple. One step the instructions left out is it seems like you have to register to submit reports - this is probably just to prevent SPAM from overwhelming the system. If you want to remain as anonymous as possible, I’d suggest you use a username that cannot easily identify you.

For each violation you submit, you can give it a name - some funny ones from the New York site include:

There are lots of nifty features with this website/application, but one of the coolest is the little state-specific licence plate icon that is generated for each violator, depending on the particular state. The picture below shows that the violator is from Pennsylvania:
