Bicyclist killed by truck in Oakland
A 44-year-old Oakland man was killed today when his bike was struck by a big rig near the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau reported that the man was struck at around 4:27 p.m. near the intersection of 66th Avenue and Joe Morgan Way, a short section of South Coliseum Way renamed this year to honor the baseball Hall of Famer.
Here’s a Google Map of that intersection:
I don’t know about y’all, but I’m getting tired of walkers and bikers getting mowed down by cars and trucks.
I’m not overly familiar with that area, but I did stay out that way for a few days a couple of years ago, and it’s in the vicinity of Oracle Arena (Golden State Warriors) and McAfee Coliseum (Raiders). I stayed just off Hegenberger Rd., which is just south and east of the intersection where this incident occurred - on the other side of the Arena and Coliseum. I used to walk to the Oakland Airport/Coliseum BART station - it was brutal on the senses - loud, ugly - concrete everywhere. The Arena and Coliseum just added to the ‘concrete jungle’ effect - no mans lands of barren concrete. I would see other people walking, but the area is clearly not meant for non-car people - car would zoom by you, with multiple lanes in several directions, sidewalks would mysteriously end - all the usual. This area is in close proximity to those two major venues, there’s a nearby highway, the airport, etc. There seemed to be a decent amount of industrial/trucking traffic around there, too.
