Bicycle-sharing at UC-Berkeley

The East Bay Bicycle Coalition reports that UC-Berkeley has started a bike-sharing program:

Green Bike Share at UC-Berkeley

Very cool stuff.

More info on the Green Bike Share program can be found at GreenBikeShare.net. It looks like it was just an idea by two students, Justin Wiley and Marcelo Garzo, who managed to land an initial $10,000 grant by the school. Way to go, guys - y’all are a credit to your university.

Can’t say that requiring helmet use is a great idea, but they’ll figure that out.

Looks like Chicago’s St. Xavier University also started a Green Bike Share program this fall. The St. Xavier program seems pretty ambitious - and they’re laying claim to being the first American University to operate a full-on European-style bicycle-sharing system, with 24×7 checkout and the like.

Hopefully the myriad San Francisco colleges and universities will follow suit soon. According to some statistics, we’re the second most densely-populated city in America - let’s do this. We have every reason to be successful with bicycle-sharing programs.
