Paved-over rail tracks on Illinois Avenue

by Peter Smith

At about 672 Illinois Street, between Mariposa and 18th, some rail tracks were paved over, making it much safer for cyclists.

Here is a Google Map of the area:

I was able to ride straight over the newly-paved section. There’s a small bump from the new paving/tar, but it’s a great improvement over having to ride across the tracks. Cyclists will no longer be required to swerve back and forth over various sets of tracks, into oncoming car traffic from both directions, to avoid being trapped in one of the rail lines.

It is possible that this was actually done before the second Sunday Streets, on September 14th, but I just noticed it yesterday.

  1. Yes, it was completed by 2nd “Sunday Streets”. Since this is on my commute, I really appreciate the extra tarmac. But there are still plenty of places on Illinois that are bare track — like up near the bridge (those tracks were filled in for SS, but the trains that use them have openned them up again).
