Update on Oakland murder
We first covered two bicycle-related murders - one in San Francisco, and one in Oakland - here.
Like the San Francisco murder, the Oakland murder does not appear to be related to bicycles in any significant way - at least, new evidence does not suggest a link:
Teenager charged in fatal shooting: A 19-year-old man was charged with murder Friday in the Tuesday night fatal shooting of a man riding a bicycle, police said.
Oakland police Sgt. Derwin Longmire said the suspect, Curtis Norris of Oakland, admitted to shooting Edward Dismuke, 38, about 9:52 p.m. Tuesday as Dismuke rode a bicycle in the 3800 block of Allendale Avenue. Dismuke died later at a hospital.
Longmire said Norris claimed he shot Dismuke because of prior disputes the two had. But police have not been able to confirm if that was the motive or if it was something else, he said.
I wanted to follow-up on this crime, too, because it was odd to have two murders occur within hours of each other, on opposite sides of the Bay, and both have bicycle riders as victims.
As bicycling continues to grow in popularity, we’ll probably become a lot more selective about which bicycle-angled crime reports to cover.
