Update on San Francisco murder

Our original coverage is here.

An update:

Jordan McKay (typo in original: ‘McCay’) was just trying to get back home in San Francisco after a long day at work in Berkeley and an evening seeing off a friend traveling to Asia.

He almost made it but came up two blocks short.

The 23-year-old went from his job at a film production outfit in Berkeley on Tuesday night to say good-bye to a friend in Oakland who was leaving for Asia the next day. McCay boarded BART to San Francisco, then pedaled his bicycle across town to the Richmond District by early Wednesday.

In that normally peaceful neighborhood - just two blocks from his home - he was confronted by two men on the street. After an argument, someone shot and killed him at 1:40 a.m. near the corner of 15th Avenue and Cabrillo Street, police said.

This story is so filled with tragedy. And it’s so bizarre. It’s like the authorities and Chronicle know something that they’re not telling us. I don’t want to be irresponsible, but how do we know he was ‘confronted by two men’? How do we even know there were two men if all anyone saw was ‘distant shapes’? Who witnesses a struggle, hears gunshots, and then does nothing at all?

And there were just two guys - two muggers - hanging out in a very quiet neighborhood in San Francisco on a Wednesday night, just chillin, parked on the side of a quiet neighborhood street, and they just happened to have a vulnerable bicycle rider come right in their direction?

An altercation ensues, words are exchanged, a physical struggle is witnessed, and then someone gets shot. The victim, Jordan McCay, probably bleeding, pounds on some doors to get try and get some help, but everyone ignores him, until residents start calling 911. Jordan dies while waiting on paramedics to arrive. Is that really it?

First, how long did it take for the paramedics to arrive? We know when the first 911 calls were made, presumably a minute or two after Jordan started banging on peoples’ doors for help. When did the paramedics arrive? Where was he shot? How many times? In a major artery?

And, granted, San Francisco closes down early, but the murderers were so cool and collected that they didn’t even bother to speed away? No tire tracks. No late-night drinking to cool off after murdering someone? And absolutely nobody was out on the streets in the surrounding vicinity to see anyone driving away? In a quiet neighborhood where you’d notice even a stray cat making his way through the night?

Sounds off. But I suppose it could have been a random mugging. That’s a stretch, I think, but I’ll admit it’s possible. There’s just a lot of detail missing.

Condolences to the family. Horrific situation.

…and an update on the Oakland murder. Again, condolences.
