Park(ing) Day Tomorrow
National Park(ing) Day is an opportunity to celebrate parks in cities and promote the need for more parks by creating temporary public parks in public parking spaces. National Park(ing) Day is Friday, September 19, 2008. Read the announcement.
The now-worldwide sensation known as ‘Park(ing) Day’ was created by our very own San Francisco-based ReBar Group. Rock on, y’all.
Here’s a Google Map of locations here in San Francisco (larger map):
A PDF of those locations is here.
There’s a Google Group if you have questions.
Check out ParkingDay.org for more details, including a HowTo Manual (pdf).
And below is a text listing of locations from that PDF. Each line usually includes the name of the new, temporary park, who it is being done by, and the street address. I’ve bolded one which appears to be quite interesting:

One interesting aspect to Park(ing) Day is, now that I’ve read some of ‘The Death and Life of Great American Cities’ (ref page), I’m no longer just a “hey, let’s throw up new parks everywhere” person - we need to be careful how we construct them, where we put them, how we improve them, etc. I still very much agree with the general sentiment - more parks, more green, more space for people, less for cars - that’s the important thing to consider for Park(ing) Day.
