The EIR of the EIR

by Peter Smith

The EIR timeline is running at about just over two years. That is, it’s already taken Gavin Newsom over two years to produce….nothing.

So, I just came back from a harrowing ride down Cesar Chavez. It was nice, though, relatively speaking, because in a quarter mile stretch of road I only almost got hit three times. Not bad, considering daily bicycle commuting in San Francisco.

But the new Exygy/SFBC widget got me thinking, what is the environmental impact of this incredible delay for the EIR? In other words, what’s the EIR of the EIR?

Being cautiously optimistic, I say that we plan to have a valid EIR in a total of about four years - another two years from now. That is when the Judge will finally lift the injunction. So, I’d like to figure out the impact of a stalled bicycle plan for a major American city? What is the financial cost and the public health burden, short term and long term, that a judge has placed on the residents of San Francisco? How long will we pay for the sins of Mayor Gavin Newsom and the Board of Supervisors, and the dereliction of duty of a single judge?

  1. Gavin Newsom has nothing at all to do with the EIR on the Bicycle Plan, and he supported rushing the Plan through the process illegally, as did the entire Board of Supervisors and the Planning Commission.
