Valet bicycle parking at 49ers Monster Park?

San Francisco 49ers valet bicycle parking?

Technically, Candlestick Park (aka Monster Park) is owned by the City of San Francisco - I think - but the 49ers play there, and that’s what is important for this post.

Many of us have seen (video) and experienced bike parking at AT&T Park, where the SF Giants play, but football season is coming up, and I started to wonder if I’d be able to ride my bicycle to a game (if I could score tickets). I was planning on going to see at least one pre-season game - the new, Brett Favre-less Green Bay is in town this weekend.

I called the director of parking operations (that’s a pretty big job, I bet) to inquire about any bike parking - and someone called me back, and mentioned that there were a couple of bike racks a couple of years ago, but that nobody biked and parked, there, really. The racks were gone now, but he’d look into it, and he’d even call his friends over at the SF Giants organization to see what they could tell him about bike parking, and valet bike parking.

He was far from convinced that anyone would want to ride out there, and expressed concern that the streets were not really bike friendly, but he seemed earnest. That’s about all we can ask for.

I was trying to be quick on the phone, since I suspect things are completely crazy about this time of year, but I didn’t manage to squeeze in an “If you build it, they will come” argument. :)
I did a quick map to show the relative distance from the geographic center of San Francisco (very unscientific) to each of both parks:

I’d say the trip to Monster Park (49ers-land) is a bit further, but not too much further. And since transportation options out that way are much more limited (No Caltrain, No Muni light rail), why shouldn’t we give bicycles a chance to shoulder the transportation burden?

Cross your fingers. Maybe we’ll at least get some bike racks.

Hooray football!

…p.s. Monster Park is named after this Monster, not this Monster.
