What about biking?

by Peter Smith

Can’t we include bikes in this master plan to get people out of their cars?

Businesses with more than 20 employees working in San Francisco would be required to help their workers ditch their cars and commute to work on transit or in vanpools under a proposal being considered by city officials.

The goal of the plan, which would be the first in the nation, is to cut greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality by getting more people out of polluting cars.

I think I’ll contact Ross Mirkarimi.

Our goal should be to get people out of cars, and into or onto something more sustainable, clean, energy-efficient, space-efficient, etc.

Is there a better choice than the bicycle to accomplish this goal? Why not have employers provide discounts for bike purchases, or other bicycle benefits? It’s not like it’s a completely new idea.

…called Mirkarimi’s office today and talked to someone who seemed nice. Took down my suggestion to include bikes in any legislation, and said he’d pass it onto Ross and his legal peeps.
