San Francisco bike plan dead in its tracks; Rally planned
Shame on Mayor Newsom and the court system for allowing this travesty to continue.
San Francisco has a completely bizarre situation on its hands - a court injunction has stopped the bike safety plan from moving forward. The city, like most cities in America, has an emergency on its hands - gas prices rising and families struggling, and mass transit packed to the gills, but due to disproportionately-placed power in the hands of some individuals, the San Francisco Bike Plan is stopped in its tracks completely - and has been. Dead stopped.
It’s almost surreal to believe that something like this is possible in modern day America - what in theory is one of the leading democracies in the world - yet, it’s true. And in San Francisco of all places. Aren’t we supposed to be generally progressive, if not the most progressive big town in America?
Some guy with a lot of money said, “No - I don’t like bikes,” and the courts and the mayor backed him up. Now it’s up to us to put a stop to the insanity.
Democracy is not just about voting for people you want to hold some elected office — it’s about the right to petition your government for “a redress of grievances.” It’s important. So important they put it in the Constitution.
On Monday we’re fixing to exercise a bunch of our First Amendment rights. I hope you’ll be there to join us.
The main acts of petition might be letting the mayor and our reps know that we want more and better infrastructure, and we want it now — via email, phone, in person, etc. — but on Monday we’re going to turn out in force, at lunchtime, to show the Mayor and his crew that our crew means business. Free speech. The right to assemble. You name it — we’ll be using it.
